See, LEGO has been making it easier to build Transformers-inspired models by introducing a variety of new hinge elements over the past decade or so (gosh, it's really been 12 years since I tried this when I was little, before the invention of click hinges? I guess I am gettting old). Now, people of my generation who feel like it was just yesterday when we tried and failed to build transformers regularly see young kids effortlessly handle the task of creating vehicles and other random objects that turn into mecha "robots". So now it is time to increase the challenge, preferably in a way that will require us to learn some new techniques instead of just needing to buy newer parts. It is time to try our hands at building machines that can transform on their own, and perhaps have other motorized functions as well. Today's model, shown above, serves as a proof of concept - it is possible to build vehicles that can transform using only one motor.

Details: The latest Transformers movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, has inspired a fresh round of builders attempting to create LEGO versions of the Transformers characters that actually transform. This one is modeled after Bumblebee, a yellow Camaro that befriends the main character in the first movie. Additional photos and video at the site above.
Details: One impressive but seldom attempted appropriately topic to try building is Transformers. See, before "Transformers" became a big movie franchise, they used to actually be cool toys that had to conform to the laws of physics when they transformed. Sure, they weren't actually functional as vehicles, but they looked great as mecha and as vehicles, and they could transform without anything needing to be added or removed. As LEGO hinges, Bionicle joints, and tiles become easier to find, we're seeing more and more people give building transforming models a shot. The builder we're featuring today has created a series of original creations and established characters that are simply excellent.
Details: Here's a frightening new idea - using casings from existing electronics to build Mindstorms-based transformers. It starts off looking like an ordinary appliance on your desk, and seconds later, it's off driving around. Rather than ruin the surprise for you, I have to ask that you check out all the videos at the site above (the fourth in the series shows a bit more of how it was done).
Details: It's tempting to try to split this into two models. I could write about how it is an amazing helicopter, with great details, elegant construction, and a decent sense of scale/proportions (which is surprisingly rare in LEGO® helicopters, especially in the official sets). I could write about how this is an excellent "mecha" robot. This is really a Transformers model, though! Which means that this thing is spectacular, and one of the most amazing morphing models we've seen in quite some time. There are some photos showing the transformation as well. Oh, and apparently this was done for a contest at the Russian-language site http://www.doublebrick.ru/ - so maybe we'll be seeing some more exciting Transformers coming up.
Details: The Brothers Brick just caught wind of this amazing model - it's the Transformer Optimus Prime - but in scale with any standard LEGO town set. Generally, when people build transformers that actually transform out of LEGO bricks, they have to use a larger scale to get things to work right. The guy who built this, though, is just a genius.
