Details: Sara DeFehr is one of the many great builders who is sorely under-represented online because she passed away before the Adult Fan Of LEGO (AFOL) community really took off. For a number of reasons, it was a very different time - LEGO wasn't marketed towards adults as much as it is today, and the selection of available parts and colors was much smaller.
Specializing in scale models of Canadian Parliamentary buildings, she earned some notoriety and was filmed for the clip above. The models featured in the clip are the Manitoba Legislature Building, New Brunswick Legislature Building, Winnipeg Old City Hall, and a version of Gruenfeld, Ukraine.
Info on her work is scarce, but what's survived of her creations has found its way to the Toy and Plastic Brick Museum, where several 0f her models have been (or are in the process of being) dusted off, repaired, and put on display.
Details: Recently, QuéLUG put on a show at ExpoRail. This two-day show at the Canadian Railway Museum appears to have been a great success. The theme this year was "coastal town" and the group worked together to combine many great models into this spectacular layout.

Details: The Winter Olympics are back again this year, and this time they're being hosted by Vancouver, BC, Canada. Although Olympic logos are a rather inconsistent affair, Canada wisely chose to highlight an unusual part of their culture in their logo. Specifically, this logo is a colorized version of an inukshuk, which is a stone landmark built by humans (frequently by native tribes found in various regions of Canada). The logo is based on a very specific inukshuk found on Whistler Mountain. Being as topical as we are, it was just a matter of time before one of us LEGO addicts found a way to build the brightly-colored logo in LEGO form. The colors of the Olympic logo are even fairly close to the red, yellow, green, blue, and medium blue manufactured by LEGO. Janey Red Brick built this as a rather straightforward sculpture/mosaic (I think it fits in both categories) with the exception of the "head", which is built upside-down.
Details: It's amazing what a few simple modifications can do to the overall appearance of a building. Here we see two modified Fire Brigade sets. This modification consists of two second floors of the proper set and a bottom floor that has had the window arrangement tossed up somewhat so that it gets away from the 'firehouse' look. What is achieved in the end is a very classical and elegant looking building, worthy of any city.
So, if you were wondering what to do with those extra copies of 10197 lying around (a problem we all wish we could have); wonder no more!
Details: Photographer johnpiercy found this beautiful display of animal sculptures at the Burlington Mall in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. I have no idea how long they'll be on display, but apparently they are there now and were brought in for a "fun zone" event that ends today. It looks like there is/was a guess-the-amount-of-parts contest as well, but I have no idea if/when we'll see any of that information surface online. The koala bears in particular are excellent, and a great example of just how much can be done with newer colors like tan and stone. The leopard mosaic is another highlight, and I love the way that round 2x2 tiles were used to make paws on the young tiger.
Details: I decided to pick a model from Canada Day to commemorate the occasion. This is a town layout made in 2005 - I'm guessing it was a group effort but I don't know who put it together. This picture seems to suggest ParLUGment - and also has an awesome Canadian flag made out of LEGO flowers. The cows in the background of that shot are awesome too. There are a ton of details in this little layout!
