Instead of putting so many in Massachusetts, they should put one at least in Salem, NH and maybe a couple more in Connecticut and Providence. And if they put one in Salem, LEGO geeks don't have to pay sales tax, and they are just across the border. Never mind Salem is in the Boston retail market, but apparently LEGO isn't aware of that. I would be much happy buying them in NH and not wait every year for the Mass. Sales Tax Holiday so I don't give money to "Devil" Patrick, the governor and his shenanigans.
The large amount of stores in Massachusetts (and California) does seem pretty hard to explain.
Don't worry about the sales tax so much, though - LEGO store discounts can help make up the difference, but you get stuck paying sales tax for Shop-at-Home purchases when there's a LEGO store in your state (even if it's in a part of the state you can't reasonably get to - Texans in particular have a pretty big problem with this).
With the rarity of some LEGO parts being very disparate across state lines (or country lines), there are often counter-intuitive things involving taxes, customs, shipping, etc that end up being a good idea if you want to get parts (or sets) at a decent price.
Rock on steven! The store in Braintree is nice, but it has very little.
