Elvis Bust

Name of Model: Elvis bust
Created by: LEGO master builders
Found at: LEGOLAND (specifically the location in Carlsbad, California, USA)
Details:
Today (1/8/2010) would have been Elvis' 75th birthday. Of course, we all know that Elvis lives, simply because you can rearrange the letters in "Elvis" to spell "lives". So, we're commemorating his birthday with this model from LEGO's Master Builders that depicts him from the shoulders up. This sculpture is one of several celebrity busts that can be found on the "block of fame" behind the Master Model Builder Shop at LEGOLAND California. Since this photo's not specifically documented below, I'm doing the rest of this post in a round-up format from various clear images of the sculpture found on flickr.

Apologies for the late post -- we are once again having issues with getting out of sync with Blogger. The issue appears to be on my end, but we're still looking into it.

Bumble Bee Sculpture

Name of Model: Bumble Bee
Created by: Nathan Sawaya
Found at: http://www.brickartist.com/large-sculptures/bumble-bee.html
Details:
Those of you who follow the gossip rags probably heard earlier this week that a certain celebrity commissioned a LEGO® sculpture for his bride. It turns out that that story is completely true, and E! Online has confirmed it with Nathan Sawaya, who built this sculpture, which will be delivered to the newlyweds early next month. The bee looks adorable and cartoonish, but I'm enjoying the construction more than anything - it's built at a 45 degree angle instead of being built straight. This makes it much easier to have the two wings be flat and sturdy, and also gives the bee's body an enhanced rounding effect. I do hope that he made sure that the bride actually likes LEGO before he spent the money!

Audrey Hepburn Mosaic

Name of Model: Audrey Hepburn
Created by: Henry Lim
Found at: http://www.henrylim.org/AudreyHepburn.html
Details:
This is another stunning mosaic made by Henry Lim. You might remember him from the Beatles mosaic that was featured here in April, or maybe from his famous Stegosaurus sculpture that was featured in March. This model was Lim's first mosaic experiment, and it's based on the Funny Face (link coming soon) photograph. You can tell from the picture that this model was built as a wall (so all the studs point towards the top of her face). This must be pretty sturdy but also pretty heavy! A few more details are available at the website above.
